News Update

Thanks for Coming Out

I’d like to thank every parent who made it to last night’s meeting. We had a pretty good turn out, a lot of questions asked… and hopefully…answered.

Some of the main points:

  • Practices start Monday 2/27 at Genesee Field from 4:45-7pm M-F
  • Players are expected to attend all practices…if you don’t come, you will not play. Miss three practices, and your status as a team member may be in jeopardy.
  • Saturday, March 10th: Pre-season Jamboree at Nathan Hale HS. A series of 3-tournament style games. First game at noon. Players please arrive at 10:30am.
  • Tuesday March 13th: First regular season game at Genesee Field. Get the complete schedule from the Sportability site.
  • The link for the Junior Varsity games is now published, although at the moment, I’m not seeing any Garfield games. The schedule is being finalized and will be up when completed.
  • The Score keeper/Timer clinic is on Saturday 2/25
  • Spring break is from 4/14-4/22. No scheduled Garfield Lax activity…
  • Please consider making a donation to help support the Club, and thanks to all of you who made contributions last night! Remember that all donations are now tax deductible...Contact Vicki, our treasurer for more info.

Please feel free to ask questions you may have by contacting
us or Coach Kelly.

Thanks again for your commitment to the program. This Club simply will not function without all of your support. I look forward to a great season, and to seeing you all on the sidelines in the coming weeks.

Timer & Scorer Clinic

WALOA (Washington Lacrosse Officials Association) will be offering their 2012 version of the Scorer and Timekeeper Clinic on Saturday, Feb 25 from 2:30-5pm. The Clinic will be held at the Bertona Classrooms on the SPU campus on North Queen Anne.

This class will introduce and refine the skills needed to be an effective and accurate scorer or timekeeper for both middle school and high school games.

In our program, parent volunteering is an essential element to the success of the season, and becoming a scorer or timer is a great way to fulfill that obligation. It’s also an excellent way to learn the game and to get the unique perspective of the game as can only be seen from the scorer’s table.

If you are interested in attending, please
register. The cost is a nominal $5.00…what else can you get for 5 buck these days?

Parent Meeting this Thursday!

The Garfield Lacrosse Club Parent Meeting, required for all participating families, will be held this Thursday, February 9th at the
Miller Community Center. This meeting will feature a dynamic presentation by the Garfield Club’s Board of Directors and an equally enthralling presentation by Garfield’s head coach, Ryan Kelly.

This will be an opportunity to meet the coaches, ask questions and get answers for all parents, not just those of you who are new to the team. Ryan will also outline important rule changes instituted this year by the
WHSBLA, our local governing body for high school lacrosse.

We’ll also be talking about the changes to the Metro Division and its impact on cross state travel (much less than in past years).

Ryan will also outline the team’s expectations for all players regarding participation in practices and games.

Finally, we will be collecting all
Liability Waiver forms. You saw these and clicked your approval when you registered, but the League requires that we have signed hard copies on file with the Club which are to be brought to all games and team events. Failure to have all these current may result in the loss of vital insurance coverage for all of us.

We hope to see you all there this Thursday, starting promptly at 7pm.

Remember too, that
Team Swag is available. We’ll have the tee shirts for sale at the meeting and will be taking orders for the jackets.

Meeting Cancelled

OK, my better judgement says that with the dire predictions for the Apocalyptic Storm of the Century about to wreak havoc on the unsuspecting residents of Seattle, we will be postponing tomorrow night’s meeting. As soon as we get it rescheduled we’ll try again…

On another note, the Club will be ordering some team jackets, seen here. The price will be $75.00. We are now accepting prepaid orders. The deadline for ordering is February 10th. Payment
jacket
must be made in advance. Depending on demand, we may extend the deadline or do a second order. The jackets will take 4-6 weeks to manufacture so we need to get going to have them for the start of the season.

If you want one, please drop an email to our
Swag Coordinator with the word “jacket” in the Subject line. Let her know what size, quantity, etc and she’ll let you know where to send your check, Unfortunately at this time we cannot accept credit card payments for this item.

teeshirt
The official Bulldog practice tee is also available for immediate purchase. Price is $12.00 and can be purchased at the Captain’s Practice sessions from now on…

Weather Update

Not to sound too much like a scaredy-cat, but we are watching the weather closely and will make a determination sometime on Tuesday weather (pun intended) or not we’ll reschedule the meeting to a later date.

Reminds me of when I lived in Atlanta years ago…the forecast called for a off-chance of snow, and the schools panicked and sent all their kids home by 10am…never did snow…

All Parent Meeting This Wednesday!

A reminder that this coming Wednesday, January 18th, is the required meeting for all parents/guardians.

We will start promptly at 7pm at the old
Meany School Annex building near the Miller Community center. The meeting is in the building northeast of the athletic field. Since parking will be tight, we suggest you try and park on E. John Street and walk across the field to the Meany School Annex Building.

This meeting is an opportunity to give you important information regarding this season’s schedule and expectations for all players. Coach Kelly will also be there to answer any questions. We will also be collecting hard copies of the signed
Liability Waivers which need to accompany the team to each game under league rules. There will be some copies available at the meeting, but please print and bring your own if possible.

Please understand that no player will be allowed to start regular season practices without these documents. Regular season practices begins February 27th, 2012 at Genesee Field.

Starting this week, on
Tuesday, January 17th, the Captain’s sessions will move to SODO Arena Sports on East Marginal Way. It will start promptly at 4pm and run until 5:30pm. Please try and arrive early enough to get suited up before the session starts…

Available at this session, the newly-minted
Garfield Lacrosse Practice Tee is available for purchase. Price is a very reasonable $12, with all proceeds going to the Club. Some of the guys already have them…

Registration remains open. If you still need to sign up, now would be a good time to do so. Go to our
Registration Info Page to get going. Remember, if you signed up last year, all you need to do is log-in and click the Register button by the player’s name.

One last item to mention: The Garfield Lacrosse Club has been determined by the IRS to be a non-profit organization under the
501c(3) provisions. This means that any contributions (donations, not fees) made since last January are fully tax deductible. Please contact us if you need any further information.

Captain's Practice Sessions Start

The Schedule for the 2012 season of Captain’s Practice sessions are as follows:

January 4th & 11th, 3:45-5pm at
Magnuson Arena Sports

January 17th, 24th, and 31st at
SODO Arena Sports at 4-5:30 pm

February 7th and 14th at SODO Arena Sports at 4- 5:30 pm

These sessions are not mandatory, but every player is encouraged to attend and participate. Since these are within the coaching blackout time, there will be no contact with our regular coaching staff. There will be an adult supervisor in attendance to make sure things go smoothly and to run some basic drills.

Please arrive in time to gear up and be ready to participate. Arena Sports has a very tight time schedule and we need to maximize our experience.

These dates have been added to the
Calendar.

A reminder, if you have not already done so, please head over to the
Registration Page and get signed up for the season. It’s quick and painless…

One last note to remember to reserve the night of January 18th, 2012 for the annual all-parent team and board meeting to be held at the old
Meany School building in the Miller Community center. Time will be announced shortly...

2012 Schedule is Out

The schedule of games for the 2012 season of Garfield Lacrosse has been released by the League yesterday. It’s on the
Sportability website that publishes and coordinates all schedules. Looks like our opening game is at home against Nathan Hale.

At this time, it appears we’ll be playing 15 games, and one preseason jamboree. Practices will start February 27th at
Genesee Field

There will also be a series of “Captain’s Practices” held in January as a preseason warmup. More details will follow as soon as I get the schedule from
Coach Kelly.

As a reminder, if you haven’t already done so, please go to the
registration link and either start an account (you don’t have to pay to do this) or register for the season. Either way we need your correct email address in our files so we can send you updates. If you are returning from last year, you already have an account. Please check that we have any updated contact information.

It also sounds like we’ll be having a large incoming contingent of underclassmen this year. Please help in getting the word out to any one interested in playing for us this year. The more, the merrier as they say...

Registrations Are Now Open!

Registrations are now being accepted for the 2012 season of Bulldog Varsity Lacrosse. Some minor changes have been made to this years procedure.

The most important one concerns each player’s membership enrollment in
The US Lacrosse Association. As has been said…Membership has it rewards. Each player’s membership provides valuable blanket insurance coverage for the team and it’s members. This coverage is only provided if every player carries a current enrollment status.

We are requiring this year that each player have a membership that remains in force throughout the season,
no mid-season renewal dates (through 6/30/2012). When you sign up, you are required to supply us your renewal date. If your current renewal date falls before 6/30/2012, your eligibility may be denied. You can manage your membership renewals here. Your cooperation is appreciated.

Players new to the high school program must upgrade their youth status to a high school status. The US Lacrosse fee for a high school player is $35.00.

Please head on over to the
Registration Page to get going!
